       Main Definitions

  1. weather |n| weather is the state of the atmosphere, to the degree that it is hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or stormy, clear or cloudy.
  2. meteorology |n| the study of the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere especially as a means of weather forecasting.
  3. "Meteorologists have predicted mild rains for the next few days."
  4. weather forecasting / weather forecast / forecast |n| an application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a future time and a given location.
  5. "Have you hear today's weather forecast?"
  6. "What is the weather forecast for next week?"


        Weather Elements

  1. cloudiness |n| the amount of cloud in the sky.
  2. flood / inundation / swamping / deluge / high water / torrent / overflow / flash flood / freshet / spate |n| an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.
  3. "In a thousand miles the flood destroyed every bridge."
  4. fog |n| a cloud like mass or layer of minute water droplets or ice crystals near the surface of the earth, appreciably reducing visibility.
  5. "We get heavy fogs on this coast in winter."
  6. precipitation |n| moisture from the sky e.g. rain, snow etc.
  7. temperature |n| a measure of the warmth or coldness of an object or substance with reference to some standard value.
  8. rain / rainfall |n| drops of fresh water that fall as precipitation from clouds.
  9. "The rain had not stopped for days."
  10. smog |n| fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.
  11. "If there is a quantity of smoke or other airborne pollutant particles present, it is known as smog ."
  12. snow / snowfall |n| atmospheric water vapour frozen in to ice crystals and falling in light white flakes or lying on the ground as a white layer.
  13. "We had a light snowfall last night."
  14. wind |n| air moving (sometimes with considerable force) from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure.



        Other Relative Elements

  1. air pressure |n| the pressure exerted by the earth’s atmosphere at any given point, being the product of the mass of the atmospheric column of the unit area above the given point and of the gravitational acceleration at the given point.
  2. cloud |n| a white or grey mass in the sky that forms from very small drops of water.
  3. "The storm was still a way off but black clouds were gathering."
  4. "Thick cloud obscured the top of the hill."
  5. season/s |n| each of the four divisions of the year (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) marked by particular weather patterns and daylight hours.

        Natural Phenomenon

  1. storm |n| a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow.
  2. "These kinds of storms can produce rain, hail snow, thunder and lightning."
  3. geological phenomena |n| volcanic activity and earthquakes.
  4. global warming |n| a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.
  5. "The company is deeply concerned by the effects of global warming caused by the greenhouse effect."
  6. meteorological phenomena |n| hurricanes, thunderstorms, and tornadoes.
  7. natural phenomenon |n| a natural phenomenon is not an engineered event manufactured by humans, although it may affect them.
  8. oceanographic phenomena |n| tsunamis, ocean currents and breaking waves.
  9. rainbow |n| a bow or arc of prismatic colors appearing in the heavens opposite the sun and caused by the refraction and reflection of the sun's rays in drops of rain.
