College Students Classification

         College Students by Year 

  1. freshman |US| / fresher |UK| |n| a first-year student, has fewer than six full academic courses.
  2. sophomore 1 |n| has at least six full academic courses (twenty-four semester hours).
  3. sophomore 2 |n| a second-year student at college.
  4. junior 1 |n| has at least sixteen full academic courses (sixty-four semester hours).
  5. junior 2 |n| a third-year student.
  6. senior 1 |n| senior, has at least twenty-four full academic courses (ninety-six semester hours).
  7. senior 2 |n| a fourth-year student.


  Others

  1. major |n| a student's principal subject or course.
  2. "She's a history major."
  3. "A math major."
  4. scholar |n| a person who studies a subject in great detail, especially at a University.
  5. "A classics/history scholar Dr Miles was a distinguished scholar of Russian history."
  6. student teacher tu |n| a student usually in his last year at a college or teacher-training.
  7. undergraduate |n| a student at a college or university who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree.
  8. graduate student |n| a student who already holds an undergraduate degree and is pursuing advanced studies at a graduate school, leading to a master's, doctorate or graduate certificate. A "graduate" can also refer to any student whohas successfully completed a program of study and earned a degree.

         Students Depending on Class Attendance

  1. full-time student |n| a student who is enrolled at a college or university and is taking at least the minimum number of credits required by the school for a full course load.
  2. regular student |n| a student who is registered as a candidate for a college degree, or in credit courses leading to a diploma/certificate.
  3. part-time |n| student is one who is enrolled in fewer than three full courses per semester.
  4. special visiting |n| a transient student.
  5. transient student |n| is one without degree-seeking status in the college.
  6. exchange student |n| a secondary-school or college student who studies for a period, usually one year, at a foreign institution as part of a reciprocal program between two institutions or countries.
